View Port Bindings via Windows based GUI – CurrPorts

January 8, 2015 by Dan B. Lee Leave a Comment

We use Windows for a reason. It's hard for computer professionals to admit it, but the a GUI and the functionality behind an app, even a small one, can be really helpful. Sometimes there just isn't enough functionality in a command prompt or console. So when little apps come along that make our lives a bit easier, it's important to give them some recognition. CurrPorts is a little executable for Windows computers that helps us out. CurrPorts will give you a table showing all the information … [Read more...] about View Port Bindings via Windows based GUI – CurrPorts

May 15, 2014 by Dan B. Lee 20 Comments

System Setup: Windows Server 2012 with WSUS 3.0 and IIS 8 Installed Clients: Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2008 R2 You've done everything right but for some reason you just can't see the clients. Here's a quick check list: If you go to your SUS server, for example http://wsus you can see a blank page and not simply the IIS splash page You can ping between both the SUS server and your client Firewalls are turned off on both the SUS server and your client The group policy … [Read more...] about WSUS not detecting clients and not listing computers

Diskshadow, VSSAdmin’s best friend

January 12, 2014 by Dan B. Lee 10 Comments

For those of you who have done shadowcopy based backups of servers, you know good and well that sometimes the mere space required for the VSS (Volume Shadowcopy Service) can make things pretty difficult when you come down to the wire on disk space. VSSAdmin is a great tool to see where your servers stand with the volumes used by the shadowcopy service, what shadows are available, and what's in use. Here are the commands for VSSAdmin. Remember: Use an elevated command prompt for all of the … [Read more...] about Diskshadow, VSSAdmin’s best friend

Exchange 2013 RPC Client Access Service keeps restarting

December 19, 2013 by Dan B. Lee Leave a Comment

UPDATE: After SP1, this issue is gone, and all services can be run normally. There's a good chance this issue was fixed at CU3 as I'm seeing user feedback in posts I was following claim that CU3 fixed the problem. Either way, life is better on SP1. This issue looks to be specific to Microsoft Exchange 2013 CU1. My environment is running Server 2008 R2 on a Server 2008 R2 Domain Level. At the time of this post, there is no telling if CU2 fixes the issue. Issue: Here's what you'll see in … [Read more...] about Exchange 2013 RPC Client Access Service keeps restarting

Add-WindowsFeature and Get-WindowsFeature not recognized

November 13, 2013 by Dan B. Lee Leave a Comment

I just wanted to write a small blurb regarding the PowerShell cmdlet Add-WindowsFeature. If you are using Server 2012, it is now called Install-WindowsFeature. Here's a write-up about it: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662309.aspx The Add-WindowsFeature cmdlet has been replaced, starting with Windows Server 2012, by the Install-WindowsFeature cmdlet. For more information about Install-WindowsFeature in Windows Server 2012, see Install-WindowsFeature. BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart on Windows 2008 R2

August 6, 2013 by Dan B. Lee 1 Comment

There are a lot of things floating around about putting in different DVDs and running gparted and taking care of this issue in thousands of different ways. I've read all over the internet that there's no option in Server 2008's installation CD to actually repair. There's also a lot of hoopla about having to use VMware Converter when you are working with a VM that's giving you this error. Here's what to do if you your Windows 2008 R2 Server gives you the error Bootmgr is missing Press … [Read more...] about BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart on Windows 2008 R2

Force your local printer to download new drivers from the print server

July 19, 2013 by Dan B. Lee Leave a Comment

Sometimes something happens with your print drivers and you need to download the new ones from the server. If you log into the print server and adjust the drivers on a shared printer, the new driver will automagically be distributed everyone who already has the printer shared. If the computer already has the driver downloaded, it will assume it knows better than you and use printer driver it already has. This can be an issue if the reason you are changing the driver is because of corruption, or … [Read more...] about Force your local printer to download new drivers from the print server

Error 29506 SQL Server Management Studio Express

May 22, 2013 by Dan B. Lee 22 Comments

I was installing SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 on my vCenter server to run a clean-up when I found that I was getting this error: The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 29506 In order to run the software, you'll need to run it as an admin from a command prompt, seeing as how you can't right click and run the software as an administrator. Open up an elevated command prompt by … [Read more...] about Error 29506 SQL Server Management Studio Express

WSUS – Forcibly Adding and Updating Clients

January 30, 2013 by Dan B. Lee 3 Comments

Sometimes there just isn't enough time or patience to wait for Group Policy to push updates. Luckily we have small commands that nudge things along. Here are a few things that get WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) moving in the right direction so you aren't sitting around waiting for Group Policy to update. I'll give you some examples and how to check to make sure forcing worked. Forcing Group Policy We should all be familiar with forcing group policy. Run this command in an elevated … [Read more...] about WSUS – Forcibly Adding and Updating Clients
