If you’re manually upgrading vCenter, you might run into this error. VMware tells you it’s either the media or the Agent that needs to be started. But in my issue, when upgrading from vCenter 5.5 to vCenter 5.5 Update 3, I needed to enable the SQL Agent Service in Services in order to get it to work.
Here’s my fix:
- Go to Services
- Find SQL Server Agent Service and see that it is disabled
- Right click the service and change it to Automatic in properties
- Start the service manually
- Retry the vCenter Upgrade
My guess is that other upgrades that I was doing earlier disabled this service for some reason. Well, it’s upgraded now!
Other’s found that their media was bad: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/219379?start=0&tstart=0
Here’s the VMware article about the bad media and hopping into SQL Studio Manager to start the agent, which won’t help if the service is disabled: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1036518
Hope this helps some of you out there. Cheers!
