I’ve had this quote on my website here at danblee.com since it started:
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
If you read my about page you’ll see my explanation as to why I cherish these words. I’ve been in the industry for more than ten years now and I can say without a doubt that this theory of wearing many hats has weathered most everything that’s come my way. I’ve heard stories of engineers and programmers being let go because they were a dime a dozen and the business had well over a dozen.
Why I know very well who Robert Heinlein is and always have, I’ve never given him the respect to read through one of his works. My lack of interest has everything to do with my disinterest in reading books in general rather than reading something from Heinlein. I’m happy to announce that I’ve started one of his popular science fictions called Stranger in a Strange Land. Surprisingly enough, it’s really good! I’m kind of caught up in it and very interested to learn what happens next.
It’s refreshing to know that a quote I hold so high belongs to a writer I enjoy. The quote now means more to me than ever.
Cheers.
